April is Arab American Heritage Month

This April is Arab American Heritage Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the many contributions that Arab Americans have made to the United States, since its declaration in 2017.

The Arab American population is made up of people from the Middle East, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The majority of Arab Americans trace their roots to Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, Yemen and Morocco. There are also smaller populations of Arab Americans from Jordan, Kuwait, Algeria and Tunisia.

Arab Americans have a rich history in the United States. Many arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, settling in cities and towns across the country. They have made significant contributions to the country in a variety of fields, including medicine, science, business, the arts and politics. Arab Americans have also made significant contributions to American culture, bringing the traditions and cuisines of their countries of origin to the country, all of which has made a lasting impact. During this month, we celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Arab Americans.

Arab Americans in Chicago

Chicago is one of the largest Arab American cities in the United States. Many of which immigrated to the city in search of new opportunities, or to find refuge after fleeing conflict in their home countries. Since arriving, Arab Americans in Chicago have contributed to the city’s economy and cultural life, and many have become prominent figures in the city’s politics and media. There are now a number of Arab American businesses and organizations in the city, as well as a number of Arab American schools and cultural centers. The Arab American population of Chicago is highly diverse, both linguistically and culturally. The most commonly spoken languages among Arab Americans in Chicago include Arabic, English and French. There are also a number of smaller communities of Arab Americans in the city, including Iraqis, Egyptians, Palestinians and Syrians.

In recent years, the community has faced a number of challenges. Despite the fact that Arab Americans have lived in Chicago for many generations, they continue to face prejudice and discrimination in various aspects of their daily lives – including housing. Research has found that Arab American renters are more likely to experience discrimination in the form of higher rental costs and worse living conditions than white renters. Additionally, some landlords have refused to rent to Arab American applicants on the basis of their religion or ethnicity.

With the unfair discrimination against this population of people, it is important to recognize the significant contributions they’ve made to our city From opening new businesses to establishing cultural centers, they’ve created a vibrant and diverse atmosphere that has enriched Chicago and its people. They have also been integral in the development of Chicago’s economy, with many working in the health care, technology and financial services industries. In addition, the Arab American community has made a strong commitment to the education of their children. Many Arab Americans have sent their children to top universities in the area, helping to ensure their success in the future. This educational success has been further bolstered by the support of organizations within the Arab American community, such as the Arab American Education Foundation, which provides scholarships and mentorship to Arab American students.

Amongst the many Arab Americans who have contributed to the city of Chicago is Rahm Emanuel who served as Mayor of Chicago from 2011-2019. During his tenure as mayor, Emanuel focused on improving the city’s fiscal health, investing in infrastructure and transportation and making Chicago a global leader in technology and innovation. He also worked to reduce violence and expand educational opportunities. In 2019, Emanuel announced he would not be seeking a third term as mayor. However, he remains an influential figure in Chicago and national politics. Emanuel is also a successful businessman, philanthropist and author. He currently serves as a strategic advisor to the Chicago-based firm, Centerview Partners.
